The city of North Augusta, SC, is located along the South Carolina/Georgia border. The area is separated from the city of Augusta, GA, by the Savannah River. The majority of the city is in Aiken County, with a smaller portion located in Edgefield County. Residents of North Augusta enjoy easy access to both Augusta and Aiken, SC, making it an increasingly popular place to live and an increasingly popular place for businesses of all sizes.
North Augusta has a unique history. After several attempts to establish towns of different names centered around trade in what is now considered North Augusta, North Augusta itself was founded by James U. Jackson in the early 1900s as a resort town centered around the luxury Hampton Terrace Hotel. The property was designed to draw the elite from Augusta and Aiken, as well as from neighboring states. The property, which included more than 500 rooms, as well as stables and golf course, was successful in its intentions until it burned down in 1916 and was never rebuilt. Despite losing the hotel, North Augusta continued to thrive.
Today, many area locals come to North Augusta to use the North Augusta Greeneway, a paved trail covering more than seven miles that opened to the public in 1995. The trail can be used for walking, running, and cycling, and offers direct access to multiple area facilities, including Riverview Park Activities Center, Brickpond Park, and River Club Golf Course. An extension of the original trail covers 1.5 miles directly along the Savannah River. There are also future plans in review to connect the North Augusta Greeneway with the Augusta Canal Path, located on the Augusta, GA, side of the Savannah River.
